CWG day 6: Wrestlers Sushil, Amit, Vinesh win gold, India bag 8 medals

Sushil Kumar led the charge as Indian wrestlers put on a stunning show in the Commonwealth Games winning three of the five gold medals on offer on Tuesday.
Amit Kumar and teenager Vinesh Phogat also bagged gold medals while Rajeev Tomar settled for the silver medal in what was a successful outing on the first day of the wrestling competition at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). The three gold medals also lifted India to fifth position in the medal's standings.

The star of the day undoubtedly was two-time Olympic medallist Sushil, who just took 107 minutes to clinch the gold medal in the men's 74kg freestyle category beating Pakistan's Qamar Abbas in an one-sided affair.
It was Sushil's first major international medal after his pet 66kg category was removed and he had to add nine kilograms to adjust in a new weight bracket. Sushil had won both his Olympic medals, bronze in Beijing and silver in London, 2010 World Championship gold, 2010 Asian Games gold and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold in the 66kg category.

Sushil was leading 6-2 in the first period when referee V. Keelan decided to give it in favour of the Indian, who managed to pin down Abbas.
Sushil was in dominating form in all his preliminary bouts. He opened his account with a facile 4-0 win over New Zealand's Jayden Lawrence in the Round of 16 and then beat Sri Lanka's Sandrage 4-0 in the quarter-final.
It was the third gold for India after Amit and Vinesh's triumph in their respective categories.

Amit won the gold medal in the men's freestyle 57kg category beating Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson. Amit won the bout 3-1 on classification points. Amit won six points in the two periods while Welson got two.
Amit had beaten Mauritian Jean Guliyan Bandoo 5-0 in the Round of 16 and then got the better of South African Bokang Masunyane 4-0 in the quarter-final. Amit booked his place in the final with an exciting 4-0 win over Pakistan's Azhar Hussain in the semi-final.

Indian teenager Vinesh Phogat then made it a double delight as she registered a thrilling 11-8 win over England's Yana Rattigan to clinch the gold medal in the women's freestyle 48kg wrestling competition.
Vinesh, 19, is the cousin of Geeta Phogat, who had won the first gold medal for India in women's wrestling in the 2010 Delhi Games.
Vinesh had beaten Canadian Jasmine Mian in the semi-finals of the women's 48kg freestyle category and Nigerian Rosemary Nweke in the quarter-finals.
The only relative disappointment for India was that of Tomar losing the men's 125kg freestyle final match to Canada's Korey Jarvis. In a close contest, Tomar lost 0-3 to Jarvis and settled for the silver.

Tomar had defeated New Zealand's Marcus Carney in the semi-final and Nigerian Sinivie Boltic in the quarters.
Another Indian in fray, Jyoti finished fourth in the women's 75kg freestyle event. Since there were just five wrestlers, the competition was held according to the Nordic System or a round robin format.

In shooting, Sanjeev Rajput won the silver medal and Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in the men's in 50m Rifle three positions.
Earlier in the day, Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar failed to reach the finals, Harpreet Singh went on to win the silver medal in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol shooting.
Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar entered finals in the 74kg catagory on Tuesday after defeating Nigerian wrestler Bibo 8-4.Rajeev Tomar, another Indian wrestler also entered finals in the 125kg catagory after defeating New Zealand wrestler Marcus Carney 11-1.

Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar crashed out in the 25m rapid fire pistol shooting. The other Indian in the event, Harpreet Singh advanced to the finals.

India go down fighting 2-4 against Australia in CWG Hockey

India put up a valiant fight before going down 2-4 against world champions and title holders Australia in their third group match of the men`s Hockey competition at the 20th Commonwealth Games, here on Tuesday.

Living upto their reputation, Australia build on a two-goal burst in the space of two minutes and were set to go into the breather with a 3-0 cushion before India pulled one back at the fag end of the first half.

India managed to re-group themselves and put up a stronger defence in the second half, where they conceded one and scored one at the National Hockey Centre here.

Chris Ciriello (14th minute, 49th), Simon Orchard (16th) and Jacob Whetton (26th) were the goal scorers for Australia, while Rupinder Singh (34th) and Ramandeep Singh (48th) sounded the board for India.

After two easy victories, it was supposed to be a real test for the Indian team and coach Terry Walsh`s boys didn`t fare too badly against the Kookaburras, who had thrashed them 0-8 at Delhi four years ago.

India started on a positive note as they invaded the rival semicircle but some clever defending from Australia kept them at bay.

Australia, however, didn`t take long to assert their supremacy as the 2010 Champions scored twice within a space of two minutes to push India on the backfoot.

Ciriello drew the first blood when he converted their second penalty corner while a minute later Orchard scored a field goal when he capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home from close range.

India struggled to gain possession of the ball after that as Australia kept their rival defenders busy.

In the 26th minute, Whetton made good use of a defensive lapse by Rupinder outside the semicircle as he sent the ball to the left of the post, beating P R Shreejesh on the way as Australia led 3-0.

Two minutes from the breather, India earned a penalty corner and Rupinder redeemed himself when he sent one hovering over the defenders to help India go into the break with a 1-3 deficit.

India showed a lot of purpose in second half as they created opportunities but failed to execute them in time.

In the 48th minute, an opportunist Ramandeep brushed off two defenders and dived in a shot to find the inside of the post as India reduced the difference to 2-3.

However, Australia didn`t waste any time as one minute later, Ciriello scored with a penalty stroke, finding the left of the goalpost.

Shreejesh came up with some good saves as he kept the Australians away, staving off their challenge at least in four penalty corners.

India will next take on South Africa on July 31st.

First playing contracts for NZ women cricketers

Ten New Zealand women cricketers have been awarded annual playing contracts by New Zealand Cricket. It is the first time a select group has been retained on annual contracts, having previously only been paid assembly fees when training and playing for the national team.

Holly Huddleston, Hayley Jensen and Felicity Leydon-Davis are some of the newcomers that have made it to the list, which also includes experienced players like captain Suzie Bates, Sara McGlashan and Rachel Priest. However, allrounder Nicola Brown had opted out, owing to her job commitments with the Hamilton City Council which restricts her availability for every tour.
"This group of players are expected to form the core of our team over the next 12 months and likely play a key role in how successful we are during this time," women's coach Hamish Barton said.
"Young players like Felicity Leydon-Davis and Hayley Jensen really took their opportunities during the summer and we're excited about their ongoing development. That's balanced out by more experienced players like Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, so there's a good mix in there.
"It's a busy upcoming summer for us and I know that both myself and the team are incredibly excited about the opportunities in front of us, beginning with our tour of the West Indies in September."
The contracts, which run from August 1 2014 to July 31 2015, come under the terms of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NZC and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA). The contracts have been structured in a manner similar to the men's senior team, with the top 10 players receiving an annual retainer based on a ranking process involving T20 and ODI cricket. The contract retainers are tiered between $10,000 to $12,000 per annum and also provide for daily assembly fees for all players selected for training camps and international tours. Players outside the top-ten bracket will receive a casual playing contract when they are selected in the team.

CWG 2014: Rahi, Apurvi bag golds, India win seven medals on Day 3

GLASGOW: Apurvi Chandela and Rahi Sarnobat clinched a gold medal each in shooting as India continued its good show at the 20th Commonwealth Games, winning seven medals in all on the third day of the competition.

Medals Tally

Indian shooters returned with five more medals on Saturday as besides Apurvi and Rahi, Ayonika Paul, Prakash Nanjappa and Anisa Sayyed claimed a silver each. India had won one gold and a silver on Friday.

India's Rajwinder Kaur bagged a bronze in women's +78kg judo competition to add to the three medals the country won in the sport, while Omkar Otari won a bronze in the men's 69kg competition to continue India's strong show in weightlifting.

With seven more medals, India took their overall medals tally to 17 with five gold, seven silver and five bronze medals and were placed fifth on the medals table.

Australia are at top with 50 medals, including 17 golds. England too have 17 golds but are placed at second as they overall they have 45 medals. Hosts Scotland are third with 25 medals out which 11 are yellow metal. Canada also have seven gold but their total is 16 medals.
In other sports, India dished out a dominating performance to notch up a 6-2 victory over hosts Scotland in a Pool A match in the men's hockey competition.

Ranked ninth in the world, India went on a goal-spree as they rode on the scores from Gurbaj Singh (6th minute), Raghunath Ramachandra (22nd, 44th), Rupinder Singh (36th, 49th) and Gurwinder Chandi (40th) at the National Hockey Centre here.

Kenny Bain (56th) and Nicholas Parkes (68th) were the goalscorer for Scotland.

After the match, Rupinder said: "It feels good to score two goals for India today. It was good game. Everyone played well. We have to learn what mistakes we made. We are looking for the final and maybe a gold medal."

Among other Indians in fray, star squash player Saurav Ghosal notched up a hard-fought 3-2 win over New Zealand's Campbell Grayson to enter the semifinals of men's singles but it was curtains for Dipika Pallikal in the women's single event.

The fourth seed Ghosal produced a gritty performance as he rallied from two-game down to eke out a difficult 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 win over the 12th seed from New Zealand.

Ghosal thus became the first Indian to reach the singles semifinals since the sport was introduced in the Games programme in 1998.
However, it was heartbreak for Dipika, who went down to Alison Waters of England in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Sixth seed Dipika squanded a one-game advantage to go down 11-8, 2-11, 9-11, 6-11 to fourth seed Alison at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Indian men's table tennis team, meanwhile, blanked hosts Scotland 3-0 to reach the semifinals but it was all over for their women counterpart after they suffered a 1-3 loss to Singapore in the last four contest.

Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh and Manoj Kumar also made resounding start to their campaigns at the Commonwealth Games, winning their respective bouts with identical 3-0 scorelines.

Vijender punched his way to the pre-quarterfinals with a unanimous verdict over Andrew Kometa of Kiribati in the 75kg bout while Manoj beat Mokhachane Moshoshoe of Lesotho with the same margin in the 64kg category.

In badminton, P V Sindhu suffered a three-game loss against Michelle Li in the women's singles but the Indian team still managed to advance to the semifinals of the mixed team championship after defeating Canada 3-1.

Silver medallists at the 2010 Delhi Games, India were leading 2-0 after the first two matches, courtesy the winning start by mixed doubles combo of Kidambi Srikanth and Jwala Gutta and men's singles player Parupalli Kashyap.
However, Hong Kong-born Michelle then stunned Sindhu 15-21, 22-20, 21-17 in an hour-long women's singles match to reduce the margin.

But men's doubles pair of Pranaav Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar made sure there are no more hiccups as they notched up a 21-15, 19-21, 21-13 win over Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng in a 49-minute match.

Earlier, Srikanth and Jwala put India 1-0 ahead with a 21-19, 17-21, 21-18 win over Toby Ng and Alex Bruce in the mixed doubles match.

Ace shuttler Parupalli Kashyap then thrashed Andrew D'Souza 21-11, 21-9 in a men's singles match that last 28 minutes to make it 2-0 in India's favour.

However, the highlight for India was the performance of Rahi, 23, and 21-year-old Apurvi as they bagged the yellow metal in the women's 25m pistol and 10m air rifle events respectively.

It was an all-Indian affair in the women's 25m pistol event as Sanorbat beat Anisa in the gold-medal match 8-2 to cap a brilliant second day of shooting competitions at the Barry Buddon Centre ar Dundee near here.

Sanorbat, who had lost to Anisa in the gold medal match at Delhi 2010 four years ago, said: "In the last Commonwealth Games she (Sayyed) had the gold and I got silver, so this time it's the other way around and it's even nicer that both the medals went to India.

Asked about her mental preparation, she said, "I'm sure about one thing, it's better to shoot technically rather than emotionally. Every time."

Sayyed said the inclement weather made the competition difficult.

"Conditions were quite difficult. The rain made it darker and I had to change the filters of the glasses. When we had our practice sessions there was no rain but, during the final, conditions changed and that made it harder," she said.

Earlier, Rajasthan girl Apurvi got India its second gold from the shooting range winning the 10m Air Rifle event with a score of 206.7, while compatriot Ayonika Paul boosted the medal tally with a silver.

Prakash Najappa also got a silver in the 10m Air Pistol event, after narrowly missing out on the yellow metal due to a lapse of concentration.

Nanjappa paid the price for a horrendous shot midway into the final round as he lost concentration and shot a disappointing 7.7 to hand the lead to eventual winner Daniel Repacholi of Australia.

The other Indian in the fray, Om Prakash had failed to qualify for the final round.

In men's skeet event, India's Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Baba Bedi failed to advance to the semifinals after finishing seventh and 19th in the qualification round.

In Judo, Sahil Pathania (upto 100 kg men) and Jina Devi Chongtham (upto 78 kg women) and Parikshit Kumar (+100 Kg) could not earn India another medal after losing in the bronze medal contest.

CWG 2014: Seasoned Bindra guns down gold after Malaika's silver showing

Star Abhinav Bindra stole the limelight by clinching a gold medal while unheralded teenager Malaika Goel bagged a silver as shooters added two more medals to India's kitty on the second day of competitions in the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday.
The 31-year-old Bindra kept his nerve to take the honour in his favourite 10 m air rifle event with a final games record score of 205.3 to bring cheers for the Indian contingent.

The 16-year-old Malaika Goel gave India their first shooting medal with a silver in the women's 10m Air Pistol event while favourite Heena Sidhu fell by the wayside at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre at Dundee.
With the addition of two more medals from the shooting ranges, India's overall medals tally climbed to 9 after collecting seven medals on the opening day.

India were placed fourth on the medals table with a tally of 3 gold, 4 silver and two bronze behind toppers England (18), Australia (15) and Scotland (10).
It was Bindra's first individual gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. He had won the pairs gold in Manchester (2002), Melbourne (2006) and in front of the home crowd in New Delhi fours years ago.

In the women's section, Goel shot an aggregate of 197.1 in the finals to finish second and grab her first senior international medal after a close fight for the gold on the opening day of shooting competitions.
Former world number one and a pre-competition favourite Heena Sindhu finished a disappointing seventh after topping the qualifications. She was the second shooter to be eliminated in the eight-women field in the final round.
The Indian men's hockey team launched their campaign on a sluggish note as they toiled hard to register a 3-1 win over a lowly Wales in their opening Pool A match at the National Hockey Centre.

Sony Alpha a6000 review: Excellent performance for the price

Photo by first post click here fore more
The mirrorless interchangeable lens camera segment is heating up. We have seen some really good mirrorless cameras across price segments this year. There’s certainly more action happening in this segment and the advanced point and shoot segment, than the DSLRs which are just iterating on set design specifications and features. Sony seems to be on a roll on that front. Although the current mirrorless camera we are testing – Sony Alpha a6000 – would also be an iterative upgrade considering it retains most of the design elements and features of the yesteryear NEX 6 (the naming convention since discontinued), one has to hand it to Sony for prolifically coming out with cameras across categories.

In terms of design, it is safe to say that the Sony a6000 takes more than an inspiration from the yesteryear Sony NEX 6. You have almost similar dimensions, the same moulded chunky palm grip with the textured rubber surface continuing all the way behind the a6000. It also takes some inspiration from the Alpha 7 in terms of the dial placement. In the NEX 6, you had the mode dial placed atop the control dial, but with the a6000, you have separate dials. But while the Alpha 7 had dials on top of the top plate, the a6000 has recessed dials. The shutter button surrounded by the switch is present on the top of the palm grip and you also have a custom button on the side. Barring the AF LED, there’s nothing much on the front portion of the a6000. The top plate has the electronic viewfinder on the extreme left hand side, followed by the accessory port, a pop-up flash menu, a mode dial and control dial on the extreme right hand side.
On the rear side, you have the non-touch 3-inch tilting LCD screen which is ideal for low angle as well as over-the-shoulder shots. The circular dial also acts as the directional pad which is surrounded by buttons. The buttons though recessed have a good feedback. Movie record button in particular is placed around the edge and it prevents accidental clicks, but it is a bit too recessed.
The metallic build on the dials as well as on the camera body is quite sturdy. Mode dial requires slight amount of force to rotate unlike the control dial beside it. The two custom buttons can be customised according to your preference. The electronic viewfinder comes with an eye-sensor and a dedicated eye-cap which makes it seem like it’s protruding out. The bundled Sony 16-50mm lens also comes with a metallic build and an electric power zoom spring-loaded slider as well.

Sachin Tendulkar, Livpure Foundation join hands to fight water contamination

Sachin Tendulkar
In what is believed to be a coming together of minds, Sachin Tendulkar and Livpure Foundation, the CSR arm of SAR group have joined hands to bring awareness among people on safe drinking water at a campaign launch event in New Delhi.
The foundation has plans to map water quality across different regions of the country and help to create a platform where stakeholder will be able to find solutions for critical water related issues.
It is also the intention of the foundation to work closely with students under the auspices of a program to be called ‘Student Ambassador Program.’ Plans are also afoot to recruit school students and train them in picking water samples for laboratory testing, to check for bacterial growth and other harmful chemicals in them.
Speaking about the campaign, Sachin said that it will aim to reduce death among children due to water borne diseases. He also stressed the need for more concerted movements in the country in this direction to fight water contamination. He said, “The initiative will restore the cleanliness of water bodies and will help in maintaining the ecological balance of the environment.”
The SAR group intends to invest INR 3 crores years annually for the next 6 years to enable the benefits to reach at least 10% of India’s population. Initially the initiative will focus on slums in urban areas in various states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, SAR Group Founder Mr Rakesh Malhotra told reporters.

My career took off after ton in Perth: Tendulkar

Once again terming it his best Test ton, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday said his career took flight following the knock of 114 on a bouncy WACA track in 1992, adding that the innings against a hostile Australian attack in Perth gave him immense confidence.
“One innings that changed my career or gave shape to my career was in Perth, 1992. Perth, at least at that time, was regarded to be the fastest wicket and the hostility of the Australian fast bowlers was something which was difficult to handle. I was able to score a 100 and I was only 19,” he said during an interaction with school children here.
“And just two matches before that, I had scored a hundred in Sydney but they were two different kinds of surfaces. I knew that Perth was the kind of wicket which I would not get to play anywhere in the world and If I can bat on Perth and score runs then I am possibly equipped to go on any other track which is fast and bouncy and score runs there.
“My career was just starting. I had done well for a couple of years by then but it really took off after that Perth innings because I felt I was ready to take on the world.
By no means was I over confident but I became a confident cricketer where any challenge put up against me, I was equipped to face that,” he added.
The retired great interacted with Ryan International school children at north western Malad during the launch of ‘Kaspersky Kids Awareness Programme’
His response came when he was asked by a student to rate his best Test century out of the 51 tons he had scored in his 24-year international career in which he also notched up 49 ODI hundreds to make it a round 100 centuries.
Tendulkar hung up his boots last November after a glittering career that saw him amass 15,921 runs in Tests, at an average of 53.78, and 18426 runs in 463 ODIs at an average of 44.83.

Disappointed Saina says PV Sindhu can win Commonwealth Gold for India

India's biggest medal hope, shuttler Saina Nehwal who pulled out of the Commonwealth Games at the last minute, has said that she is disappointed at missing out on the Glasgow games and apologised to the fans. However she has said that India could still win the Gold, thanks to the Jwala Gutta-Ashwini Ponnappa pair and PV Sindhu.
In an interview with theTimes of India on the eve of the Commonwealth Games that starts in Glasgow today, Nehwal said, "I think we have chances to win medals in all the categories, and two gold medals with Jwala (Gutta) and Ashwini (Ponnappa), and PV Sindhu".
The 2010 Commonwealth Games Women's singles badminton champion pulled out of the Glasgow games due to lack of fitnes and failure to recover sufficiently from blisters on her feet that she suffered during the Australian Open Super Series.
"I just have a few issues like not being fit and during Australia I got the blisters and got injured. It took time for me to recover and so I am withdrawing from the CWG," the 24-year-old told Reuters in a text message.
"I thought I could at least be fit for the next two events (World Championships and Asian Games). "After Australia I didn't get enough time to train because of the issues with my leg."
"A sportsperson's life is such...it's really tough", she told the Times of India
The July 23-Aug 3 event will also be without both defending men's singles champion as Malaysia's world number one Lee Chong Wei was ruled out with a thigh injury earlier this month.
Lee, the two-time defending Commonwealth Games champion aggravated an injury he suffered during the Thomas Cup and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

Rahul Gandhi's vision for reviving Congress is exactly right

Rahul Gandhi is not a popular man. Each week brings fresh news of an anti-Rahul rebellion, and the narrative remains pretty much the same: Helpless Sonia fails to hold together leaders angry at clueless Rahul; Congress party implosion imminent.
In the midst of this constant doomsday-mongering then, it is refreshing to stumble upon someone who has a completely different view of the same set of rather dire circumstances, as does Rajesh Ramachandran in the Economic Times. His column's title, "Will Rahul Gandhi get his mojo back?"  is a bit misleading as it is unclear whether Rahul ever found his mojo at any point of his long but rocky career -- except perhaps the very early honeymoon period when he first became an MP.
But titles aside, the column does offer two important departures from the now staple Rahul narrative. One, there is a genuine ideological difference between Rahul and the Congress leadership. This isn't just a matter of naive Rahul being led by the nose by his 'NGO-type' advisers. There was good reason why he recently held his own organizational review without inviting the usual suspects on board, argues Ramachandran:
"There was no point in bringing them on board anyway because his "poor-only" agenda would have never gone down well with the traditional leadership. These leaders have thrived on the leadership opportunities offered by the umbrella party. And they firmly believe that Congress' success lies in being everything for everyone, instead of turning it into a 'Dalit-minority-poor' party. So, the leaders have all shuttered their shops and have gone into some sort of a hibernation."
The column takes a far more cynical view of Rahul's internal critics, framing them as career politicians whose 'rebellion' is  really an unseemly power grab for the chief minister post, be it in Assam or Maharashtra. None of them are quite as concerned about the Lok Sabha results as they pretend to be, writes Ramachandran: "Congressmen without power are like retired faujis. If they don't join some other job, they just sleep off their hangover waiting for their next round of burrapegs and pension."
The other interesting difference is that the column takes seriously Rahul's plan of action for Congress revival, arguing, "A dramatic course correction by Rahul to be the "Dalit-minority-poor" party of north India is a big gambit. If the Congress replaces the BSP as the No. 1 Dalit party of north India, it could revive itself in Uttar Pradesh and gain substantially in other states. The combination can work miracles in West Bengal and many southern states as well."
Of course, this will indeed entail "a long and arduous journey," made more so by the fact that the BJP is aggressively and successfully courting the Dalit vote -- and at the expense of the Congress Party.  According to a National Election Study article in The Hindu, one in every four Dalits voted for the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha elections, while one in every three voted for the NDA, which included parties such as the Republican Party of India (Athvale) and Lok Janshakti Party.
"State-level parties such as the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Biju Janata Dal in Odisha, and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu performed well and garnered a major portion of the Dalit vote. The Left Front in West Bengal received a major drubbing and huge chunk of its Dalit vote base shifted toward the Trinamool Congress. The BJD in Odisha gained a share of Dalit votes from the Congress. Similarly, the Congress lost a substantial share of Dalit votes to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi in Telangana, and to the NDA coalition and YSR Congress in Seemandhra."
Whereas, in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, a post-poll analysis by Economic Times
shows that Dalits as well as the minority communities and non-dominant tribal groups still opted for the Congress. But this should be cold comfort for Rahul given that his entire campaign strategy focused largely on the backward caste and low income communities, highlighting his government's schemes such as the MNREGA, Food Security Act and Land Acquisition Act which were aimed at the marginalised sections of society. Over and again, Rahul failed to communicate with the very constituencies he was targeting, often using language and terms such 'escape velocity' that failed to persuade.
More tellingly, The Hindu report notes, "BJP’s Dalit vote base in this election is largely the upwardly mobile sections (urban, educated, middle classes, with high media exposure)." Rahul greatest failure has been his inability to take a nuanced and complex view of caste and minority identities, treating them instead as monolithic, homogenous voting blocs. Hence, the monotonous one-note populism that marked his campaign rhetoric. This has allowed the BJP to woo away the aspirational segments within these constituencies. This is especially ironic for a leader whose Congress revival strategy is focused on building and empowering Dalit leadership.
As Ramachandran rightly notes, there is everything right with Rahul repositioning the Congress party as a genuinely populist liberal party. It would be political suicide for Congress to reshape itself as a pale imitation of the BJP, for instance, or try and out-Modi Narendra Modi in a desperate bid to imitate the winner. It is also disingenuous for Gandhi critics to give such credence to mutinous leaders that they once dismissed as sycophantic power seekers. Their disenchantment with Rahul is no more altruistic than their once slavish devotion to the dynasty.  For better or worse, with or without Rahul, the Congress party must rebuild itself as a credible left-leaning alternative to the BJP, and our democracy will be better for it.
But to set goals is easier than to achieve them. If Rahul wants to make Dalits, tribes, minorities and the poor his party's core constituency, he will first have to figure out how to woo them at the polling booth. Rahul and his vision will have few takers until he's mastered the first art of politics, i.e. how to win an election.  If he fails, someone else in the Congress party will do it instead, spelling the end of dynasty. And that won't be such a bad thing either for a genuinely populist national party.

Govt orders security audit of IT infrastructure

NEW DELHI: Alarmed at the rising cases of cyber attacks emanating from the web space of a host of nations, including Pakistan, China and the UAE, the Centre has ordered security auditing of the entire IT infrastructure of the central and the state governments.

There has been a spurt in cyber crimes against Indian establishments and the exercise has been initiated to check the preparation of government establishments against such activities, communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Monday.

"All central government ministries/departments and state/Union Territory governments have been advised to conduct security auditing of entire IT infrastructure. All the new government websites and applications are to be audited with respect to cyber security prior to their hosting," Prasad informed Lok Sabha.

21,699 websites were hacked in India in 2011, which grew to 27,605 in 2012 and 28,481 in 2013. In the five months of 2014, a total of 9,174 hacking incidents have been reported so far.

Apart from the hacking incidents, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) reported 13,301 incidents of web security breach in 2011, which grew to 22,060 in 2012, and to 71,780 incidents in 2013. So far this year, 62,189 units have been reported. "These incidents included phishing, scanning, spam, malicious code, website intrusions etc," Prasad said.

The attacks have been observed to be originating from the cyber space of a number of countries including Pakistan, China, UAE, US, Turkey, Brazil, Bangladesh, Algeria and nations in Europe.

The government has circulated computer security policy and guidelines to all the ministries and departments, regarding steps to be taken to prevent, detect and mitigate cyber crimes. Also, it has circulated crisis-management plans for countering cyber attacks and cyber terrorism, Prasad said. The government has also set up sectoral CERTs in the critical areas of defence and finance.

As per the cyber crime data maintained by the National crime Records Bureau, a total of 1,791 cases were registered in 2011, which grew to 2,876 cases in 2012, and to 4,356 cases in 2013. Within these, there has been a spurt in cyber crimes where cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code.

The home ministry has issued an advisory to state governments on cyber crime. "State governments have been advised to build adequate technical capacity in handling cyber crime including technical infrastructure, cyber police stations and trained manpower for detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of cyber crimes," Prasad said. The government has also initiated steps on development of cyber forensics tools and for training police and judicial officers in these so that the digital evidence can be presented in courts.

Microsoft reportedly readying job cuts in Nokia acquisition

Microsoft is planning its largest round of layoffs in five years as the software giant looks to integrate Nokia Oyj's handset unit, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing people with knowledge of the company's plans.
The job cuts, expected to be announced as soon as this week, will likely affect positions in the Nokia unit that serve the same function in other parts of Microsoft, as well as in marketing and engineering, Bloomberg reported. Microsoft added roughly 25,000 employees when it completed its $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division in April.
Sources told the news agency that the round of job cuts could be the largest in Microsoft's history, exceeding the 5,800 positions it eliminated in 2009.
CNET has contacted Microsoft for comment and will update this report when we learn more.
The report appears to buttress a prediction made Friday by Nomura Securities analyst Rick Sherlund, who wrote that he expected Microsoft to announce layoffs that would range between 5 percent and 10 percent of its employee head count when it releases its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report on July 22. He estimates that Microsoft could eliminate about $1 billion in costs through a 25 percent reduction in the Nokia business.
The acquisition marked the end of a significant chapter in Nokia's history and the start of a new one under Microsoft. The software giant is looking to the devices maker to continue promoting its Windows Phone mobile operating system and to help in its plan to transform itself into a devices and services company.
