Saina & Sindhu, India's best bet at World C'ships

Sindhu, fresh from a bronze in Glasgow Commonwealth Games, would try to ensure that she ends up better than third, a position she managed in the previous edition which made her the first Indian to win a medal at the prestigious event.
Back after a break

Saina, on the other hand, is back in action after taking a break to recover from the leg injury she sustained during her Australian Open triumph in June, as a result of which she was forced out of the Commonwealth Games.
"Till the end of July, I had not fully recovered from the injury which I sustained after Australian Open. This has affected my training but in the last three weeks, I have caught up and feel I will do my best in this tournament," Saina told PTI ahead of the mega event.
In men's singles, CWG gold-medallist Parupalli Kashyap will be India's best bet for a medal.

Pro Kabbadi League, Bengaluru Bulls vs Kolkata Bengal Warriors: Bengaluru revive semi finals hope with a superb victory

Bengaluru Bulls followed the footsteps of their captain Manjeet Chillar and delivered a convincing victory over the already eliminated Bengal Warriors. Bangaluru won the match by a scoreline of 37-24 scoreline and need 1 more win in their remaining 3 matches to book a berth in the semi finals.

The mach saw arguably the best all rounder in kabaddi show the world exactly what he is made up off. Manjeet Chillar, Bengaluru’s captain showed his worth in defence as well as raiding as he seemed miles ahead of anyone in the competition. It seemed like there was not a raider who could escape his grasp while his raiding was on par with that of Ajay Thakur.

Ajay Thakur made a comeback after 2 games in this match and he immediately proved his worth to the team, ending up being the highest point scorer for Bangalore. He started off in amazing fashion as his first 3 raids resulted in three points, at which point the Bulls lead by 7-3.
The Bengal Warriors started a mini comeback at this point as they dismissed both Ajay Thakur and Manjeet Chillar as they tied the score line at 10 minutes mark. But after that it was all Bengaluru as they just kept on amassing points as they ended the first half at 15-12.

The second half saw the Bulls in prime form as they scored points after points and executed tackles after tackles, driving the Bengal Warriors completely out of the game.

Since the Bengal Warriors are already out of the tournament, the defeat will do the  little harm. But the Bulls will take solace on this victory as it makes their semi finals chances even brighter.

Pujara, who was among the many Indian batsmen to fail in the team's 1-3 Test loss against England, has been granted permission by the BCCI to play for the 144-year-old club. He is expected to join the Wayne Madsen-led side next month to play for around four weeks.

"Derbyshire County Cricket Club is pleased to announce that they have agreed terms with Cheteshwar Pujara that will see the Indian Test star join the county as their overseas player for the final run in of the 2014 LV=County Championship season," the club said in a statement on its website.

"Subject to final approvals and completion of paperwork, Pujara is set to return to England where he will gain valuable experience of English county cricket competing in the final four weeks of the Championship season," it added.

Pujara, 26, has played 24 Tests for India, scoring 1,872 runs at an average of 49.26 and a highest score of 206. In July, he scored 81 in India's tour match against Derbyshire at The 3aaa County Ground.

Elite Performance Director, Graeme Welch said: "We're an ambitious team and have an exciting group of players who are developing fast.

"Pujara joining us at this stage of the season is a real boost for the lads and the remaining Championship matches we have ahead of us will give him exactly the experience he is looking for."

He said Pujara has the experience to fill in the vacant place left by West Indian Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is now on national duty.

"With Shiv now back in West Indies preparing for Test match action and Marcus North focusing on our one-day campaign, Pujara will bring an added dimension to the side as we look to finish our Championship season strongly," said Welch.

Chief Executive Simon Storey said, "We've been focused on delivering a long-term legacy from the visit of the Indian tourist side to Derby in July, including the creation of our Cricket Derbyshire India Club.

"We hope the opportunity to see Pujara play county cricket for Derbyshire will inspire cricket followers across the City and the wider county and open up the Club to a new generation of fans," Storey said.

F1 Will Not Return to Buddh International Circuit in 2015

When India was first dropped from the 2014 F1 calendar, I was very upset. However, people consoled me with "it will come back in 2015 anyway, so don't worry". Turns out, all those attempts were in vain because Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that the 2015 Indian Grand Prix will not happen after all.

After dropping India from the 2014 calendar, the top-guys at F1 said they intended to return to the Buddh International Circuit in an early-season role for 2015. Before I delve into what went wrong, you ought to know that F1 is classified as entertainment instead of sport in India, which results in the levying of a lot of taxes. Then there is also all the issue of surmounting bureaucracy to bring in equipment for race weekends.
Bernie Ecclestone clarified that it is too late for a 2015 return of the Indian Grand Prix and the concerned organisers must settle contractual obligations if they wish to keep the hopes of a possible comeback in 2016 alive. He added that Jaypee Group failed to sort out the 5-year contract in time for a return next year.
Since the FIA approves the next season's calendar in September and the final one in December, I suppose Formula One fans in India will have to wait another year to indulge in some live-action, if at all.

Samsung still No.1 in India, but Micromax is catching up: IDC

There’s some relief for Samsung, which has been having a rough time in the smartphone market, as far as sales and revenue are concerned.

IDC’s report for India’s mobile market in Q2 is out and according to the numbers, it is Samsung who is leading in the mobile market, not Micromax. Previously, a report by Counterpoint Research had said that Samsung was number two in the overall mobile market in India and that Micromax had taken the lead.

IDC numbers showed that in the overall mobile market, Samsung had a 17 percent share, while Micromax had a 14 percent share, ahead of Nokia which was the previous number two and now has a 10 percent share. Karbonn and Lava are at number four and five respectively and interestingly ‘Others’ occupy 42 percent of the market.

It should be noted that Counterpoint Research had completely different numbers for Samsung and Micromax in the overall mobile market. The research had said Samsung was in second place with a 14 percent share, while Micromax was leading with 16.6 percent.

Samsung had spoken out against the Counterpoint Research and maintained that they were still the leaders in the Indian market. Samsung’s BD Park, President & chief executive for south-west Asia, had said “there’s a ‘business motive behind release of such kind of data”, and said that, “In India, it might be 1-2 percent up or down. Samsung’s market share has doubled over the second place, so what is the meaning of comparing or saying that the gap is narrowing.”

Now it would seem that IDC report should come as a relief for Samsung, but not entirely. It must be noted that each research firm tracks the market using different parameters, looking at channels they have established good contacts in, so numbers tend to vary from company to company, as we have pointed out earlier.

According to  Jaideep Mehta, Vice President and General Manager – South Asia, IDC, “While Samsung has held on to its leadership position in the market, it is noteworthy that Micromax is growing faster…Given the current growth rates, there is a real possibility of seeing vendor positions change in the remaining quarters this year.” The report also notes that among the top five vendors, Micromax (18 percent growth) and Lava (54 percent growth) were the only ones to have outstripped the market growth in the overall mobile business.

According to IDC’s Q2 2014 numbers, India’s smartphone market saw an 84 percent year-on-year growth. The report also notes that 71 percent of the market continues to be on feature phones. The overall India mobile phone market stood at 63.21 million units in Q2 2014, which was a 5 percent increase over Q1 2014, out of which vendors shipped a total of 18.42 million smartphones.

The report notes that the sub-$200 category is gaining in the market and has a total contribution of 81 percent to the smartphone numbers. What this means is that cheaper smartphones are outselling the premium devices. The report added that Phablets (5.5 inch – 6.99 inch screen size) had an overall 5.4 percent of the smartphone segment and more than half of the phablets shipped were in the under-$250 price band and Indian vendors are dominant in this segment.

Where the top five smartphone players are concerned, the list is as follows: Samsung, Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and then Motorola.

Samsung has a 29 percent market share, and according to IDC high volume support came in from the sub $150 products such as Galaxy Star pro and Galaxy S Duos. Micromax had 18 percent of the market share and occupied the second spot, while Karbonn had an 8 percent smartphone market share. Lava was at fourth position with 6 percent smartphone market share and according to the IDC report, it could soon topple Karbonn. Motorola is number five on the list with a five percent market share and according to the report, the company crossed 1 million mark within 5 months of its launch.

Overall it’s evident from the report that what is going to drive the Indian smartphone market is the sub-$200 category. The report also notes Samsung needs to work aggressively on its pricing since Micromax could topple it in the coming quarters. We have already discussed how the company can turn things around by fine-tuning some of its long-held principles, and it’s important that the company does it as quickly as the next quarter to not lose any more of its market share, but it’s going to be a tough few months for the Korean smartphone giant.

It will however be more interesting to see how Q3 and Q4 play out in the Indian mobile and smartphone market with the entry of players like Xiaomi, Oppo, in India. Xiaomi in particularly has managed to set off a new craze around itself. We’ll have to wait and watch on how it reflects in the next couple of quarters.
