American dream crashes in last 30 seconds against Portugal

The Americans were about to romp into the round of 16 at the World Cup, about to walk off with their first come-from-behind win at soccer's showcase. About to advance with a game to spare. About to win consecutive World Cup games for the first time since 1930.

But they wilted in the Amazon heat and humidity.

Varela's goal on a diving header off Cristiano Ronaldo's cross on the game's last play gave Portugal a 2-2 tie Sunday on an exhausting night in the rainforest capital.

Now the Americans may need at least a point Thursday against Germany to advance to the knockout stage. They could advance with a loss, depending on the result of the Portugal-Ghana game that will be played simultaneously.

"Obviously we're disappointed. But you have to look at the positives," captain Clint Dempsey said.

They fell behind early, when Geoff Cameron's wayward clearance gifted Nani a fifth-minute goal.

But Jermaine Jones' exquisite 28-yard shot tucked inside the far post in the 64th minute and Dempsey's goal off his stomach in the 86th put the Americans ahead 2-1. A screaming, pro-American majority in the crowd of 40,123 was ready to party late into the steamy night.

Then Varela beat Cameron to the cross, deflating the red, white and blue-clad fans.

"It was unfortunate," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "You've got to move on."

Just like four years ago, the Americans relied on a late push. But they couldn't sustain it.

Now it's onto Recife. Nothing is decided.

They could move on. Or after all this, they could be sent home.

LIVE FIFA World Cup 2014: Depay scores in last minute to give Netherlands 2-0 victory against Chile

Leroy Fer scored a minute after coming on as a substitute to help give the Netherlands a 2-0 victory over Chile on Monday and top Group B at the World Cup with three consecutive wins.

Fer had only just replaced Wesley Sneijder when he rose almost unmarked in the Chile penalty area to put the Dutch ahead with a powerful 77th-minute header. Another substitute, Memphis Depay, then finished off a counterattack in injury time to double the lead.

Both teams had already advanced to the second round, but Chile's first loss of the tournament consigned it to second place in Group B.

The Dutch now travel to Fortaleza to play the Group A runner-up in the round of 16. Chile faces the Group A winner.

Film director Subhash Kapoor held in actress molestation case

Mumbai: Bollywood director Subhash Kapoor, who was accused of molesting actress Geetika Tyagi at her residence in suburban Versova, was arrested on Monday, police said.
"Film director Subhash Kapoor was today arrested in connection with the molestation case filed against him by actress Geetika Tyagi on April 14 this year," said Assistant Police Commissioner Samadhan Dhanedhar.

The 'Jolly LLB' fame filmmaker Kapoor was produced before an Andheri court which granted him bail, the officer said.
Kapoor's associate Danish Raza, who is said to be scriptwriter, is still wanted in this case, the ACP added.
Tyagi had filed a complaint against Kapoor at Versova Police Station in April alleging that he and his associate Danish had in May 2012 come to her residence and inappropriately touched her. Tyagi claimed Kapoor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of incident, police said.
The actress also alleged that Kapoor defamed her using various media platforms over a period of time, police said.
The duo was accordingly booked under IPC sections 354 (outraging a woman's modesty), 501 (Printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
Following the probe, Kapoor was on Monday held while Danish is absconding. Tyagi has acted in films such as 'Aatma', 'What The Fish' and 'One by Two'.

Sugar prices rise by Rs60 per quintal

In the national capital, sugar ready M-30 and S-30 traded
higher at Rs3,320-3,460 and Rs3,300-3,430 as against
previous levels of Rs3,270-3,400 and Rs3,250-3,380 per quintal.

New Delhi: Sugar prices rose up to Rs60 per quintal in the country’s leading wholesale markets on stockists buying after the government raised import duty on the sweetener to 40% besides additional interest-free loan of Rs4,400 crore for mills. Further, increased offtake by bulk consumers to meet summer season demand also influenced prices.

In the national capital, sugar ready M-30 and S-30 traded higher at Rs3,320-3,460 and Rs3,300-3,430 as against previous levels of Rs3,270-3,400 and Rs3,250-3,380 per quintal. Thus showing a rise of Rs50/60 per quintal. Fears that sugar prices may rise further in the wake of government’s decision to discourage import by raising duty to 40% and improve funds liquidity for the domestic sugar mills, stockists were seen enlarging positions, said sugar traders. They said if monsoon remains subdued, prices are well set to rise further in coming days.

“The hike in duty will support domestic sugar industry and make imports costlier”, said a wholesale sugar trader in the national capital. The loan will be provided to cash-starved sugar mills to make payments to cane farmers, while the import duty on sugar will be hiked to 40% from the current 15%, food and civil supplies minister Ram Vilas Paswan said.

In order to bail out sugar mills that are unable to pay Rs11,000 crore dues to sugarcane growers, the government also extend subsidy of Rs3,300 per tonne on export till September this year. In line with general trend, sugar mill delivery M-30 and S-30 followed suit and traded higher at Rs3,160-3,300 and Rs3,140-3,240 against last close of Rs3,130-3,245 and Rs3,110-3,225 per quintal, respectively. In the millgate section, Mawana, Kinnoni and Asmoli also ended higher at Rs3,230, Rs3,300 and Rs3,250 from previous levels of Rs3,160, Rs3,240 and Rs3,210 per quintal, respectively.

At Mumbai’s Vashi wholesale market, small sugar (S-30) advanced by Rs25 per quintal to Rs3,030/3,152 from last Saturday’s closing level of Rs3,005/3,152. Medium sugar (M-30) climbed by Rs15 per quintal to Rs3,152/3,316 as against last week’s level of Rs3,152/3,301.

Australian physicists simulate time travel

Researchers At The University Of Queensland In Australia Have Simulated Quantum Particles Travelling Through Time By Using Photons.

This helped the physicists study the behavior of these particles too.

The theory of quantum level was first predicted in 1991 and the latest study was done to find out more about whether time travel would be possible at this level or not.

The researchers have succeeded in simulating the behaviour of a single photon that used a wormhole to travel and interact with its older self. This is known as a closed timelike curve. The study is published in Nature Communications.

Lead author Martin Ringbauer said that they used a mathematical equivalence between two cases for this.

In the first case, photon one "travels trough a wormhole into the past, then interacts with its older version," Ringbauer explained. And in the second case, photon two was made to travel through normal space-time but this photon interacted with another photon that is trapped inside a closed timelike curve forever.

"We used single photons to do this but the time-travel was simulated by using a second photon to play the part of the past incarnation of the time travelling photon," said University of Queensland physics professor Tim Ralph.

Ringbuaer has expressed hope that the study will help in bridging the gap between two critical theories. "The question of time travel features at the interface between two of our most successful yet incompatible physical theories ? Einstein's general relativity and quantum mechanics," Ringbuaer explained.

He added that in his theory Einstein has described the world at the very large scale of stars and galaxies, while quantum mechanics describes the world at the very small scale of atoms and molecules.

Indian rugby team fails to field 15 players

In a major embarrassment for Indian rugby, the team was left a player short against Uzbekistan in the Asian 5 Nation Tournament in Lahore after some Army members failed to get clearance for the Pakistan trip.
India, the top-ranked side in the tournament, could muster only 12 recognised players and two more had to be borrowed from the management before the 14-member team ultimately went down to the unfancied Uzbekistan 23-17.

But the vice-president of the Indian Rugby Football Union Aga Hussain did put up a brave front and said that the players fought a hard game.
"Fourteen players taking field in a 75-minute game was indeed very brave. And I am proud of the team. They were held the opposition at 17-17 for quite sometime till Uzbekistan got two penalties and bagged six points in the process," Hussain said.
Hussain also defended the absence of players, which accounted for the debacle.
"Any Army personnel travelling abroad requires clearance from Millitary Intelligence (MI). But the situation is so fluid at the moment that the clearance could not be obtained and hence half the team could not travel," he said.
Hussain also refused to play the blame game and said, "We had given sufficient intimation but it sometimes happens with army clearance, so it's just an unfortunate case and we blame nobody."
Hussain, however, hopes to field a full 15-member squad against hosts Pakistan on Sunday with one of the junior members soon expected to join the side.
"We will have 15 boys that will take the field as there have been no major injuries. And one of our players, who stayed back in Delhi for his interview will join the team soon after getting visa," he said.
